Baxter headed to BYU

BYU got a big local commitment on Monday when four-star 2016 power forward Gavin Baxter chose the Cougars.

BYU got good news on Monday when one of its top targets made his commitment to the Cougars.

Gavin Baxter, a 6-foot-7, 180-pound power forward from Provo (Utah) Timpview, announced his commitment to BYU via Twitter.

Scout's 53rd ranked prospect in 2016 and 10th rated power forward, Baxter is an very long four man - he has a 7-foot-1 wingspan - who can play inside and out. He's a big time athlete that needs to get stronger, but his skill set should keep expanding as he does.

According to his AAU coach with the Utah Prospects, Tim Davis, the work that the Cougars' coaching staff put in with Baxter played a big role in his commitment.

"He felt the most comfortable with the BYU staff," Davis said. "They had been recruiting him the longest and, as of late, the hardest."

Baxter's athleticism and versatility will come in good use at BYU.

"Gavin's athleticism will be unique to BYU on both sides of the floor," Davis said.

Gavin Baxter is BYU's lone commitment in the 2016 class. He'll take a two-year LDS mission before enrolling.
