Byars Makes UVa His Choice

In the end, it might have been some highlight tapes that helped Derrick Byars select Virginia. His father said that he really liked how intense and passionate the Virginia fans were and that certainly didn't the Cavaliers who received a commitment from the Memphis swingman on Tuesday evening.

Byars Heads To The ACC

Derrick Byars, a 6-6 swingman from Memphis (TN) Ridgeway, only needed two official visits before deciding on a college. As it turns out, Byars might have been a bigger fan on the ACC than we thought.

His short list included Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Clemson and Virginia, but it was the two ACC schools that wound up receiving visits before the Cavaliers were able to seal the deal shortly after his trip. His first visit was two weeks ago to Clemson.

"He just liked the school and the coach," Byars' father told BCH. In reality, Virginia is a great fit for Byars. He likes to play in attack mode and the Cavaliers style of play under Pete Gillen is certainly conducive to that line of thinking.

Timing is everything sometimes in recruiting. Virginia was a major player in the recruitment of Torin Francis. Once Francis committed to Notre Dame, the Cavaliers hosted Byars on campus and could return to the original plan of making sure they landed a quality swingman in this class. It took them less five days to lock up one of the nation's top wing players. Byars is ranked No. 65 in BCH's post-summer rankings.

From the gossip department, we keep hearing that Virginia looks strong with Roanoke (VA) Catholic junior shooting guard J.R. Reynolds. At the July Nike Camp, Reynolds was a standout underclassman who displayed range and consistency from the perimeter.
