NBPA Top 100: Xavier Simpson

Xavier Simpson talks about where he is in the recruiting process and what his plans are going forward

At NBPA Top 100 Camp one of the top perfoemrs from the point guard position was Xavier Simpson. The true floor general showed an improved shooting stroke, and continues to look like one of the better leaders in the Midwest.

“I feel I played pretty good,” said Simpson of his play at camp and in the spring overall. “I am showing the things that I have worked on like my outside shot. I am just hoping to continue to play well and continue to help my team win in July.”

After almost issuing a commitment in the spring, Simpson is determined to take a look at all of his options. Schools such as Xavier, Purdue, Iowa, Iowa State, Illinois, and Texas Tech remain very much involved.

About his recruitment, Simpson said, “I am setting up visits now. They will probably happen after July. I think I will set those up sooner rather than later, probably in the next week or two so I can see a few more schools.”

He continued, “I want to see Illinois, Iowa State, and Purdue for sure.”

The one school that Simpson has made repeated visits to is Xavier, and most recently he tripped to the campus for their team camp.

“I love Xavier,” said Simpson. “Those coaches have been on me since I was a sophomore and showing me loyalty. Coach (Travis) Steele and Coach (Chris) Mack have been real consistent and shown me a lot of loyalty which goes a long way.”

He continued about the Musketeers team camp, “It was good. I went there for a few games during the year, so it was good to play at Cintas. I just felt the love down there and like I had a good connection with them.”

When it comes to the schools he hopes to see in the next month or two, Simpson started with the Illini, “I like Coach (John) Groce and Coach (Dustin) Ford. We have a good relationship. They aren’t pushing me to commit or anything, they are calling just to check in, and I trust them a lot.”

About Iowa State, Simpson said, “Coach (Steve) Prohm has been hitting me up. We are starting to build a good relationship. Right now I am just taking it slow, but it has been good so far.”

Purdue has also been recruiting Simpson for a while and made it clear they want a point guard in this class.

“I like Purdue,” said Simpson. “They have been on me hard. C.J. Walker committed so they backed off, but when he de-committed they started coming back after me hard. I have a good relationship with some of the players and coaches.”

Simpson was adamant he would make several visits before issuing a decision, though he doesn’t plan on waiting too long with the process following the month of July.
