Jones commits to Xavier

Tyrique Jones, a bruising power forward, made his choice for Xavier on Monday.

Just a day after Tyrique Jones visited Xavier, the 6-foot-7 big man, committed to Chris Mack and his coaching staff.

“I picked Xavier because of coach Mack,” Jones told Scout. “He has a great record as a coach. He’s done a great job at Xavier.”

Jones, a standout at Saxtons River (Vt.) Vermont Academy, picked Xavier over serious interest from Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Minnesota, Miami and Temple.

“They call it power forward U,” Jones told Scout. “On my visit I felt like I fit in perfectly. Jalen Reynolds, before he went to college and from watching film I see a lot of similarities in my game and I think they’ll help me develop.”

“I didn’t think I was going to commit this early, but it felt right,” Jones added.

Jones also cited strong relationships with Mack and Xavier assistant Luke Murray when asked about his choice.

“He was recruiting me at Rhode Island and when he got the job at Xavier, I felt comfortable with him and I have a good relationship with coach Mack.”

Jones is ranked the No. 23 power forward and is regarded as a three-star prospect.
