July Recruiting Preview: Texas

The Texas coaches will be busy this week. Here is a look at who they will be watching and where they will be.

The busiest month of the year for college coaches and high school prospects is upon us. Every Wednesday through Sunday for the rest of the month will involve players and coaches crisscrossing the country playing in some of the top basketball events around. Here is a look at what the Texas coaches will be up to during July.

Already Shaka Smart and his staff have one commitments on the books for the class of 2016, and that is high scoring shooting guard Jacob Young. The Houston native jumped on board in June, and he will again be running with Howard Elite during the month of July.

While Young is a good start to the class, there is no doubt that Texas needs to add some serious size to the class after loading up on guards and wings in the 2015 recruiting cycle.

At the top of the list for Texas is Jarrett Allen, Marques Bolden, and Javin DeLaurier, with another big in De’Ron Davis definitely in the mix.

This allows Smart and his staff to really lock in at the adidas Uprising Gauntlet Finale. That is in Atlanta, and it will be where Allen is with Texas Pro, DeLaurier is with Team Loaded Virginia, and Davis is with the Colorado Hawks. Bolden will be at the Peach Jam with Pro Skills, and definitely will have the attention of the staff.

While bigs are definitely the priority, that doesn’t mean Smart is going to turn down any guard or wing with big time ability. Two that immediately come to mind and fit the mold would be Kamern McGusty and De’Aaron Fox. Both are Texas natives, and both are high on the radar. McGusty will be at the Under Armour All-American Camp while Fox will be at the Peach Jam with Houston Hoops.

While 2016 clearly will have the majority of the attention from the coaching staff, the 2017 class will also have some players getting looks.

Expect the Longhorns to really track some key members of the class. One would be Dallas prospect P.J. Washington who is running with Team Penny at the Peach Jam. Also Jarred Vanderbilt and Isiah Jasey of Houston Hoops will be Peach Jam. Beyond that expect local prospect V.J. Bailey to get evaluated at the Under Armour All-American Camp.

Other prospects will definitely emerge, and potentially even become priority recruits for the Longhorns, but at least to start this is who it looks like will have their attention as things get going in July.
