July Recruiting Preview: Duke

The Duke coaches will be busy this week. Here is a look at who they will be watching and where they will be.

The busiest month of the year for college coaches and high school prospects is upon us. Every Wednesday through Sunday for the rest of the month will involve players and coaches crisscrossing the country playing in some of the top basketball events around. Here is a look at what the Duke coaches will be up to during July.

At this point Duke doesn’t have a commitment in the 2016 class, but a few kids are clearly in their crosshairs. The two that immediately come to mind are Harry Giles and Jayson Tatum. The No. 1 and No. 3 ranked players in the class, Giles and Tatum very would end up at the same school, and most think if Duke isn’t the outright leader, they are the co-leader. Tatum is with the St. Louis Eagles and Giles with CP3, and both of them will be at the Peach Jam.

While those two will be at the Peach Jam, in Atlanta at the adidas Uprising Gauntlet Finale a few other top targets will be in attendance. One is point guard Frank Jackson who will be with the Utah Prospects, and the other is another point guard in Dennis Smith who will be with Team Loaded North Carolina.

What will be interesting is how much Duke checks in at the Under Armour All-American Camp on Josh Jackson. The No. 2 overall player is very interested in Duke, but to this point the Devils have only had lukewarm interest. How much time Duke spends recruiting and watching Jackson will be a story to monitor in July.

Beyond those guys Duke will likely also head to the Under Armour Camp to check in on Sacha Killeya-Jones who recently de-committed from Virginia. Another big is Marques Bolden who will be at the Peach Jam with Pro Skills.

While 2016 clearly will have the majority of the attention from the coaching staff, the 2017 class will also have some players getting looks.

Duke should be spending time at the Peach Jam with some top 2017 targets. Players such as Troy Brown of the Las Vegas Prospects, Wendell Carter of the Georgia Stars, Jarred Vanderbilt of Houston Hoops, D.J. Harvey of Team Takeover, and Trae Young of MoKan Elite are all very clearly on the Duke list of priorities in the class.

Other prospects will definitely emerge, and potentially even become priority recruits for the Blue Devils, but at least to start this is who it looks like will have their attention as things get going in July.
