July Recruiting Preview: Xavier

The Xavier coaches will be busy this week. Here is a look at who they will be watching and where they will be.

The busiest month of the year for college coaches and high school prospects is upon us. Every Wednesday through Sunday for the rest of the month will involve players and coaches crisscrossing the country playing in some of the top basketball events around. Here is a look at what the Xavier coaches will be up to during July.

Chris Mack and his staff were able to lock down one commitment early from three-star power forward Tyrique Jones. The highly athletic and tough Jones will be playing on the adidas circuit with the New York Rens.

Jones just recently joined the Rens where he will have some high profile teammates in the starting lineup with him, and there is no doubt that the Xavier staff will be tracking him at all their stops, the first of which will be the adidas Uprising Gauntlet Finale in Atlanta.

While Jones is a good start to the class, there is no doubt that Xavier wants to add another big into the equation, and the two top targets appear to be Taurean Thompson and Dylain Painter. Thompson isn’t able to play in July due to injury, but Painter will suit up with Team Final at the Peach Jam.

Also on the radar down low is Kevin Marfo of BABC who will be at the Peach Jam, James Banks of the Atlanta Celtics who will be at the Gauntlet Finale, and Sedee Keita who will be playing with We R 1, and going to Charlotte for the Under Armour All-American Camp.

Clearly adding a second big guy to the class is important, but probably the top overall priority is at the point guard position, and a pair of prospects really have Xavier’s attention. The first is King James floor general Xavier Simpson and the other is Indiana Elite point guard Quentin Goodin.

Also New York Lightning product Shamorie Ponds is a realistic option. Ponds and Simpson will both compete at the Peach Jam while Goodin will start at the Gauntlet Finale.

Landin a wing is a bit of a luxury for the Musketeers in this class, but still two are sure to get a ton of attention. Five-star Markelle Fultz is definitely going to be a priority as will three-star Xavier Sneed.

Fultz will get things going at the Under Armour All-American Camp while Sneed will compete with the St. Louis Eagles at the Peach Jam.

While the 2016 class is the main focus, Xavier is sure to track some 2017 prospects as well. The Indianapolis duo of Kris Wilkes and Paul Scruggs will be at the Under Armour All-American Camp while fellow Indianapolis native Jaren Jackson will head to the adidas Gauntlet Finale.

Also in 2017 recnetly offered power forward Derek Culver will be seen and he will be at the adidas Invitational with Ohio Basketball Club, and also keep an eye on the Georgia Stars wing duo of Chuma Okeke and Daniel Lewis.

Other prospects will definitely emerge, and potentially even become priority recruits for the Musketeers, but at least to start this is who it looks like will have their attention as things get going in July.
