UA Finals: Markelle Fultz continues his rise

SUWANEE, Ga. -- Five-star guard Markelle Fultz nearly records a triple-double in a loss at the Suwanee Sports Academy for the Under Armour Association Finals.

Markelle Fultz’s rise in Scout’s 2016 top 100 has been swift, and if his play at the Under Armour Association Finals is any indication, his climb in the rankings hasn’t reached its peak.

Fultz didn’t play on varsity at Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic until this past season. He ended his junior campaign as the WCAC player of the year and with a number of high major offers. Fast-forward to the middle of July and Fultz has his pick of schools.

On Friday, with schools like Xavier, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Louisville and others looking on, Fultz scored 29 points, reeled in eight rebounds and tossed out eight assists.

Standing 6-foot-4, Fultz, who runs with the DC Blue Devils, has a long set of arms, is a very good athlete and is quick off the dribble. As his game has progressed, he’s increasingly become more versatile. His passing has improved a great deal over the past six months, as has his court vision, which was on full display against Sports U.

From a scoring standpoint, Fultz it starting to round out his arsenal. Eight months ago Fultz was comfortable attacking the basket and pulling up from mid-range. He still does both of those things quite well, but now he’s becoming more confident in his long-range shooting, both off the catch and on the move. He hit four three-pointers in the loss to Sports U.

Thus far, Fultz has taken unofficial visits to Xavier, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Kentucky and Louisville. He’s planning to take some official trips in August. The only official currently set up is to Arizona.
