Four-star forward Braxton Blackwell cuts list

Braxton Blackwell, one of the best forwards in the 2016 class, told Scout he has his list of schools down to six.

Four-star forward Braxton Blackwell narrowed his list of schools to six, just a day before the third and final July evaluation period.

“It was really hard to cut off some schools,” Blackwell told Scout. “There were some really good schools recruiting me. I feel really good about these six – Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, Kansas and Virginia. I feel really good about them.”

What’s the next step for Blackwell, who will transfer from Nashville (Tenn.) CPA to Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill for his final season?

“Just to continue to build my relationship with the coaches,” he said. “Then take my official visits and hopefully commit before the season starts at Oak Hill.”

Blackwell said he is still working on finalizing his official dates.

“I want to see all six,” he said. “I know you can only take five. Tennessee and Vanderbilt are really close. I’ll probably take an official to Vanderbilt and an unofficial Tennessee.”

Blackwell discussed what he likes about each of his finalists:

Vanderbilt: “It’s the hometown school. There’s pressure to stay in Nashville for Vanderbilt. Coach Stallings is a great coach. It’s home at Vanderbilt.”

Tennessee: “It’s the same thing. They’re the home state school. Rick Barnes and his staff are doing a great job. Coach Barnes has done a great job producing great wings. That makes me really interested.”

Alabama: Avery Johnson, plus I have a really good relationship with Alabama assistant coach Bob Simon. He’s been recruiting me since 8th grade. I’m excited about the opportunity to play for a former NBA coach and former NBA player.”

Texas: “Shaka Smart is awesome. He has a lot of swag. He knows what’s he’s doing. He gets his guys to play really hard. There’s a opportunity for me to come in and play a lot of minutes because in the 2016 class they have six scholarships.”

Kansas: “Bill Self is a legendary coach and a Hall of Famer. It feels like everyone that goes there goes to NBA. He plays a great style offensively. He uses his bigs and wings there. They have a great tradition. That’s where basketball started.”

Virginia: “Tony Bennett is a great Christian guy. You can always talk about God. One of my good friends Kyle Guy is a commit and my uncle Ralph Sampson so there’s some pressure from him to go there.”

Blackwell is currently ranked No.
