Las Vegas: Kevin Samuel emerges

LAS VEGAS -- College coaches are always looking for new post prospects to add to their recruiting list. Kevin Samuel, a 6-foot-9 big man from Texas, fits that billing and is sure to add interest after playing in the Fab 48 this week.

During the first evaluation period, I received a tip to check out Dreamteam, a team out of Texas, that had a 6-foot-9 sleeper that recently came to the United States from the Caribbean.

On Thursday at the Fab 48, which is held at Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman, Kevin Samuel and the Dreamteam took on Expressions Elite, a Nike EYBL team, in pool play.

Although his team struggled and the game wasn’t competitive in the second half, Samuel, a 2017 prospect, showed some impressive physical gifts. To go with his legitimate size, Samuel is equipped with a pair of lengthy arms and wide shoulders. Samuel ran the floor with ease, impressed with his athleticism and got off the ground quickly.

Offensively, Samuel struggled some. He did have a few put backs and made a nice spin move into a right finish. But overall he’s still raw on that end. Where he impacts the game the most right now is from a shot-blocking standpoint, as he uses his length, instincts and athleticism to get to shots.

According to Dreamteam coach Orin Bailey, Kansas State and Houston have offered him a scholarship, while Baylor, UCLA and Texas A&M have put in calls about him.
