No one knows yet where Maliek White will end up, but whichever school signs him is likely to bring in a player who surprises its own fan base. The Virginia point guard has been widely overlooked nationally and has the strength and confidence to contribute as a freshman, and ultimately he projects as a multi-year starter at the college level.
And he’s now in the process of determining which school will prevail for his services. White will take official visits to Pittsburgh (Sept. 19 weekend), Cincinnati (Sept. 26) and Providence (Oct. 3), and he’ll take an unofficial to Old Dominion this weekend. He also made an unofficial to VCU early this week and may return to the Rams’ campus later on.
White ran the show for Reign this summer with verve and aggression. He’s a quick penetrator who finishes drives frequently off the glass and can drive in either direction, and he’s also a tough competitor.
Additionally, he’s a talented jump shooter who has three-point range. His ability to score inside and out make him a challenging matchup for defenders, who can’t shade him for either his jumper or drives.
From here, he’ll take his trips and sort out which school fits his interests best. He has a few factors in mind as he embarks upon the road.
”I want to play at a high level at a school with coaches I have built relationships with,” White said, “and have an opportunity to contribute early. (I also want) a tough and gritty program.”
