Recruitment is heating up for M.J. Walker

M.J. Walker talks about his recruitment and his decision to focus on basketball and not football this season.

Four-star wing M.J. Walker is one of the top overall athletes in the class of 2017. A star in hoops as well as football, Walker has a ton of options, and now the recruiting process is continuing to get going.

“This summer I felt like my game improved and I got better,” said Walker. “My mentality has changed to take over and be more aggressive, so this summer was good.”

He continued, “My ball handling and keeping that tight has been a focus. Also decision making is something that I feel I have really improved on.”

Recruiting wise things are really taking shape for Walker who has some of the top schools in the country showing him significant attention.

Florida has been calling me the most, then Florida State, Maryland, Northwestern, and a few other schools,” said Walker.

About the interest from the Gators, Walker said, “The coach was saying that on offense he wants players to be aggressive and play with freedom. He said that if I come I would fit in with my aggressive style and how I can shoot the ball, so I think it could be a good fit.”

When it comes to Maryland, Walker added, “I like Coach (Mark) Turgeon. He tells me about what he thinks I can improve on. Some coaches they just tell you what you want to hear, but Coach Turg broke it down to me, and told me what I can get better at and I liked that a lot.”

One interesting aspect of Walker’s recruitment is that he is also a star football player. However this year Walker is focused on basketball.

“Right now I am not going to play this year because of my shoulder injury, but it is still an option,” explained Walker. “I have potential in both, so I am keeping that option open in the future.”

With him moving forward in his basketball recruitment, Walker knows what he and his family will be focused on when looking at schools.

“My mom is huge on academics so he wants a good academic school and my dad tells me to find a place that has a great coaching staff with teammates that make me feel like family,” explained Walker.
