On Campus: August 28

This weekend numerous key official visits are taking place. Keep a close eye on Frank Jackson, Shamorie Ponds, and Miles Bridges as the official visit season begins to kick into high gear.

The first big official visit weekend is upon us. Starting today many of the nation’s top prospects are making their way to college campuses all over the country. Here is a look at a few of the key visitors.

In the Midwest the Illinois Fighting Illini have a huge weekend in front of them. They have Xavier Simpson and Xavier Sneed on campus for their official visits. Illinois absolutely has to land a point guard and Simpson is one of their main priorities. The four-star floor general was great all summer long, and while no commitment is expected, this visit is key for the Illini.

Sneed plays a position where the Illini have a major stockpile of talent, but none the less he is key. Illinois has been working hard in the St. Louis area, and Sneed is a key piece to the puzzle. The athletic and versatile Sneed might have Illinois at the top of his list heading into the visit, so this is one to monitor.

Down the road from Illinois, the Indiana Hoosiers are also having a big weekend. Miles Bridges and Curtis Jones will both be making their official visit to Indiana. Bridges is the highest ranked player visiting this weekend, and his high school teammate Jones is a major priority for the Hoosiers.

Maybe the visit to keep the closest eye on is on Tobacco Road where the Duke Blue Devils are hosting Frank Jackson. The five-star point guard is said to be leaning to Duke, and there is no doubt the Blue Devils are going to push hard for a commitment. Already with Jayson Tatum in the class, Duke could be on the verge of another special group, and landing Jackson would be huge for them.

One prospect who is definitely on commitment watch is Shamorie Ponds. Ponds has been one of the major priorities for Chris Mullin since the NBA Hall of Famer took the job, and the local product makes his official visit to Queens this weekend. The four-star point guard is one of the better scorers from the perimeter in the class, and this would be a nice local get if the Red Storm are able to close the deal.

Out west San Diego State has a key weekend as well. Four-star power forward Jalen McDaniels and four-star shooting guard Jordan Mathews both will visit the Aztecs. After landing a transfer commitment from Teki Gill-Caesar on Thursday, this could be an enormous weekend for the future of the Aztecs program.

Also five-star point guard Kobi Simmons visits Kentucky, five-star post Juwan Durham visits Connecticut, four-star point guard Cassius Winston will trip to Pittsburgh, and four-star center James Banks is headed to Texas. All three of these are huge visits, but all three prospects are also expected to have extended recruitments, so it looks like this is just the first step.
