Jalek Felton first announced for the Tar Heels last December. He wavered during the early summer, however, open discussing other schools and contemplating visits to campuses such as Kentucky.
Felton’s hesitation appeared to stem from UNC’s ongoing NCAA concerns related to the prior academic scandal, and the Tar Heels’ athletics programs — albeit men’s basketball was not cited specifically in the notice of allegations — have struggled to shake off the malaise.
But following his conversation with Williams, Felton is now fully on board and gives UNC a foundation around which to construct what’s likely to be a large 2017 class.
”He’s 100 percent committed to Carolina,” Felton’s grandfather, Raymond Sr., told Inside Carolina’s Sherrell McMillan.
Felton is the nephew of former UNC great Raymond Felton, who also starred as a prepster in South Carolina. The two are very close and certainly the family legacy at UNC bolstered the Tar Heels’ chances with Jalek from the very beginning. That said, the program’s coaches and fans can breathe a sigh of relief that any unwanted suspense surrounding his recruitment is now put to rest.
The Tar Heels have enjoyed their finest recruiting week in quite some time, having also landed 2016 center Tony Bradley earlier this week. They also have scheduled an in-home visit with top-60 senior wing Brandon Robinson for next week, with an official visit likely to follow this fall.
