Coming into the commitment press conference for Xavier Simpson, it seemed that four schools were in the mix. However privately on Tuesday night word began to spread in back channels that none of those four schools would be the pick and he would go to Michigan.
That turned out to indeed be correct as Simpson announced his intentions to play for John Beilein and the Wolverines at his school. This is a big win for Michigan who needed a point guard commitment in this class, and beat out Miami, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa State for his commitment.
Simpson is one of the better pure point guards in the class of 2016 and ranks as the No. 55 player overall. With his ability to make others better as well as create for himself, Simpson really raised his stock during the month of July, especially with his extremely impressive performance at the Nike Peach Jam.
This is big for Michigan as it fills one of the major needs that they have in the class. Simpson is a four-star prospect, and the fourth commitment for the Wolverines. He is the third player from the state of Ohio to head north and play for Michigan in this class.
Simpson joins three-star prospects , Jon Teske Ibi Watson, and Austin Davis in the class. Michigan likely is done for this class, but if the right prospect were to commit then there is a chance that the Wolverines could add a fifth member.
