Swingman will head west for first official trip

Damien Jefferson will travel to New Mexico for his first official visit next weekend, he told Scout. The outstanding athlete and scorer has made unofficial visits to places such as Xavier and Michigan, but the Lobos will welcome him for his first official trip.

Damien Jefferson's name hasn’t been at the forefront recently, as other recruitments have generated more publicity. But the 6-4 swingman at East Chicago (Ind.) Central is involved in a high-major recruiting battle this fall.

To that end, Jefferson will take his first official visit — to New Mexico — next weekend. He previously had visited schools such as Xavier and Michigan unofficially, but the Lobos will get the first official trip.

At this juncture New Mexico stands out on his list along with Ball State, Illinois-Chicago, DePaul Blue Demons and Minnesota. Jefferson claims to hold offers from all but the Gophers.

Jefferson averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds per game as a junior, and he’ll enter the 2015-16 season as one of the area’s most celebrated prospects. I observed him with the SYF Players and came away impressed with his athleticism and ability as a spot-up shooter.

Wherever he lands for college, he’ll need to tighten up his dribbling and mid-range game. Jefferson already produces offense at the rim and from distance, so adding additional layers will be key. New Mexico has been involved for a long time and thus it’s no surprise the Lobos are getting the first official, and we’ll have to see if the Gophers or others choose to become seriously interested as well.
