Four-star PG Cassius Winston is ready to announce

Top 30 prospect Cassius Winston is gearing up for his college choice. What does he like about the three finalists? Winston breaks it down with Scout.

Cassius Winston is set to announce his college decision on Friday, but the four-star point guard out of Detroit (Mich.) U of D Jesuit hasn’t finalized his college choice.

“I haven’t made it yet,” Winston told Scout. “I just set the date because I’m ready to be done with it.”

“It’s very, very tough,” he added. “When you have so many good opportunities it’s hard to pick and choose from.”

Last week Winston, who ranks No. 28 overall in the 2016 recruiting class, narrowed his list of choices down to Michigan State, Pittsburgh and Stanford. He then took his final official visit to MSU.

“It was a lot of fun,” Winston said. “There was a lot of action this weekend and campus was live. It was great visit.”

What stood out about the Spartans?

“How much support the athletes get and the love the school has from the fans,” he said. “That was kind of crazy and seeing how close the team was. It was good visit.”

“They’ve been recruiting for a long time now,” he added about MSU. “[Tom Izzo] got to me well and I got to know him. We’ve been building a relationship for a while.”

The weekend before visiting Michigan State, Winston traveled to Pittsburgh for an official visit.

“I love the coaching staff,” he said of the Panthers. “I love the city. The coaches are like family. They are in the ACC so it’s going to be good basketball.”

Pittsburgh has a strong tie to Winston through assistant coach Marlon “Smoke” Williamson.

“I’ve known Smoke basically all my life,” Winston said. “He always giving me good advice and guidance and things like that and it’s more than basketball. He’s like an uncle to me.”

Winston’s first official visit was in early August to Stanford. He cited the post-school opportunities and the coaching staff as things that stand out to him.

“It’s a beautiful city and they have a great coaching staff,” he said. “They have that opportunity waiting for you right there where you could be set for life. They have an opportunity to make something new happen in basketball.”

Winston will announce his choice at a pep rally at his high school on Friday afternoon at 1:30.
