Four-star PG Cassius Winston commits to Michigan State

Cassius Winston, a highly touted lead guard out of Michigan, made a verbal commitment on Friday.

Four-star point guard Cassius Winston announced a verbal pledge to Tom Izzo and Michigan State on Friday afternoon at a press conference at Detroit (Mich.) U of D Jesuit.

"I called coach Izzo and told him I was coming," Winston said shortly after the announcement at the press conference. "He was really excited."

"He's been great to me," he added. "He's been loyal to me for four years. We've been building a great realtionship with him for the last four years so we are pretty close."

Winston, Scout’s No. 28 overall prospect, took an official visit to Michigan State last weekend.

"Right after that visit I realized this is the place I wanted to be," Winston said.

Prior to the Michigan State visit, Winston also took official visits to Pittsburgh and Stanford.

Izzo and his staff and Michigan Staff have reeled in a terrific 2016 recruiting class, as Winston gives them three recruits ranked among the top 48 players in the country.

Winston joins five-star wing Josh Langford, who ranks No. 19 overall, and four-star post player Nick Ward to make up their class, which jumps from No. 7 up to No. 2 in the 2016 class rankings.

But the Spartans aren't done. Winston visited MSU with AAU teammate, close friend and five-star wing Miles Bridges and he's already started recruiting him.

"If there's an oppotunity for him to play with me, I'd love that," Winston said. "But if he doesn't I wish the best for him."

Through 14 games with The Family in the Nike EYBL this past spring and summer, Winston averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 assists and 5.1 rebounds a game. He also shot nearly 42-percent from three on 67 attempts.

Winston is regarded as the No. 7 point guard in the class.
