Kentucky signee Wenyen Gabriel had coaches and recruitniks in attendance at the National Prep Showcase buzzing late Sunday night
After rising from unranked to No. 10 overall in Scout’s post-July top 100, it seemed doubtful that Gabriel would appear underanked at the event, but Gabriel showed he’s taken another step in the right direction.
In the first half against Canarias Basketball Academy, Gabriel, who has grown to 6-foot-10, showed the complete package for Wilbraham (Mass.) Wilbraham & Monson Academy. He was active, aggressive and flashed his versatility on both ends.
Gabriel was aggressive in the open court. He snatched defensive boards and looked to start the break. He was also assertive in the half court, where he looked to drive the ball and attack the rim. But he also showed his jumper, by knocking down an 18-foot pull-up jumper and a three off the catch.
Defensively, Gabriel was just as impressive. At his size, he slides his feet well laterally and is equipped with impressive athleticism. He’s a multi-positional defender and his quick instincts and length allow him to impact shot attempts. He blocked a pair of jump shots against CBA.
Gabriel still needs to get stronger and work on his stamina, as his second half didn’t match his first, but the potential and upside is turning into impressive production.
There aren’t many prospects that boast his size, length, athleticism, fluidity and skill. The combination of those things, allows him to be effective as a wing or a power forward and he certainly has the ability to play both positions on each end of the floor.
In all, Gabriel finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and arguably the most eye opening performance of the event.
