Q&A with five-star wing John Petty

DRAFFENVILLE, Ky. -- John Petty, who went for 17 points and 14 rebounds in a win on Saturday, spoke to reporters at the Marshall County Hoopfest about the developments in his game, as well as the latest in his college recruitment. Here's a Q&A with the highly touted 2017 prospect.

Do you feel like on your high school team it’s more your job to get your teammates involved, rather than be a dominant scorer?

John Petty: Not really, because we have a lot of dominant scorers. I’m just trying to get everyone in place. I like to facilitate more. I’m not really [focused] on being a dominant scorer, but more a leader really.

What have you worked on the most during the offseason?

In the offseason what I worked on my ball handling. Going into college, I’m going to be a two-guard so I’ve got to learn how to handle the ball as well as I can score.

Did you do any visits this fall?

I did a couple visits. Actually two. Alabama and Kentucky. Those are the two.

With Alabama, they have a new coach in Avery Johnson. Obviously you’re in an in-state guy what’s he telling you?

He’s really just saying he’s going to change around the program from previous years and Alabama’s history. So I can’t wait to see what he has planned.

What is Kentucky telling you when they are recruiting you?

He basically is honest. He tells me he has a lot of great talent coming in, so you have to fight for your position at Kentucky. That’s no problem. I like to compete and I’m a competitive person.

What’d you think of the Big Blue Madness visit?

It was a real great experience. All the fans, seeing Demarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis, it was just great to be around.

Who else has been in to see you?

This fall Arkansas came in, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama and Kentucky came in.

Do you have any plans to take any visits this season?

I don’t know which ones yet. I’m just really working with my mom to see which one I’m going to go to.

Do you feel like a school or a group of schools are prioritizing you more than others?

Yeah it’s really a couple – Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and really Kentucky.

What are some things you are looking for in a school?

Other things I’m looking for is a relationship with the coaches, how they treat you and most of all what I want to major in, in school, because you know school is more important.

What do you want to major in?

I’m thinking about business right now, but it might change. You never know.

A lot of the 2016 players committed early. Ideally would you rather get your recruitment over with or wait it out?

I’d rather go late. It’s really up to my mom. We talk it about it all the time, but we haven’t really made a timeframe yet.
