Florida signed two 2016 prospects in the fall. Scout breaks down how the future Gators have performed during their senior seasons.
The lone backcourt prospect committed to Florida in the 2016 recruiting class is 6-foot-4 guard Eric Hester.
Scout had the opportunity to evaluate Hester, of Oldsmar (Fla.) Christian, at the Under Armour Holiday Classic in Torrey Pines (Calif.) in late December.
Hester, who has a wide set of shoulders and a lengthy set of arms, is known for his ablity to defend and that was certainly on display. Hester has potential on that end of the floor because of his lateral quickness and impressive athleticism combined with his size and length. Hester will be able to defend multiple positions at the next level.
Hester, a three-star prospect, plays well in transition and excels in an uptempo environment. He has a quick first step and when he gets to the rim, he’s able to adjust his shots well and finish.
The next step in his development is improving his ball handling, as his handle is loose at times and he struggles against pressure, as well as his long-range shooting.
Hester’s high school teammate – Dontay Bassett
– is also a 2016 Florida signee. So our viewing of Basset, a 6-foot-8 power forward, came at the same event.
Bassett has fine size, but good length and mobility for a power forward prospect. He runs the floor fluidly and does so with a purpose, often times beating the opposition to the other end. Offensively, Bassett still has a ways to go, as he lacks back to the basket moves or a face up game. But he will corral offensive boards, dunk drop off passes and finish in close range in transition.
Defensively, Bassett has potential. The tools we mentioned above – length, mobility and athleticism – factor in here. In our viewing, he competed and played hard. Bassett also is a good area rebounder that will fight for boards and pursue the ball with both hands. He also alters shots around the basket.
A three-star prospect, Bassett is an intriguing prospect with a nice set of tools and physical gifts at his disposal.
