Point guard Daron Russell is putting huge numbers as a junior. For Russell, who has excellent speed end to end, the year has been filled with big games, but there is still work left to do as more and more schools are taking notice on the recruiting trail.
“I think the season is going well,” said Russell of the season. “It is never going to be as good as I want until we win the championship, but I think I have been playing well so far.”
He continued, “I’m trying to focus on my team. When I get into the lane I want to be someone who makes the right pass and doesn’t look to score.”
On the recruiting trail Russell is beginning to become a more popular target, and is likely to see an increase in attention as the high school season ends and the spring AAU season begins.
“New Mexico just came in, Seton Hall, VCU, Temple, La Salle, Grand Canyon, those have been the main schools watching me,” said Russell. “I have had a chance to see Temple, VCU, and Seton Hall.”
Temple is a school with home field advantage for Russell, and it is a situation that greatly intrigues him.
“I really like Temple,” said Russell. “They are always going to be in the mix because they are in the city. Also I like their style of play and I really like Coach (Fran) Dunphy.”
Also the Seton Hall Pirates have really made Russell a priority and the Big East program makes sure to stay in consistent communication with him.
“I really like Seton Hall because they are always texting me and staying in touch,” noted Russell. “They tell me what they see in my game, and what I can improve on. Also Coach (Kevin) Willard is a really good guy.”
When it comes to VCU, Russell thinks he would fit well with what the Rams like to do.
“VCU also keeps in touch a lot,” he explained. “They like to get up and down and run a lot which is a good thing, and I think I would fit in well with them.”
At this point Russell is gaining as much information about the schools recruiting him as he can, but one factor above all else will impact where he heads to college.
“The most important thing for me will be my relationship with the head coach,” noted Russell. “I want to go somewhere that I have a strong relationship with the head coach so I know that I will have a good experience.”
