Point guard McKinley Wright is someone who has seen a major boost in his recruitment this spring. A tough kid who makes plays, Wright is now on the radar of numerous high-major programs, and continues to show improvement with his game.
“It has been a really good spring individually and for our team,” said Wright of his spring. “I feel we are the best team in the country and we are playing really well right now.”
He continued, “I am working on becoming a better outside shooter. I think that can take my game to another level.”
On the recruiting trail things have picked up for Wright who is fielding a lot of calls from college coaches.
“I’ve been talking to a lot of schools,” noted Wright. “I have talked to Oregon and Iowa a lot who haven’t offered, and then I also I have been talking to schools that have offered like Xavier, Iowa State, Dayton, and Minnesota pretty much every day.”
Iowa State is set to get a visit from Wright soon, and it will be a return trip for the point guard to Ames.
“I visit Iowa State on June 12,” said Wright. “It is a great program and the fanbase is crazy. I saw them play Oklahoma and I had a great time. I am looking forward to hanging out with the guys and getting to know the coaches better and stuff like that.”
Close to home the Golden Gophers are working hard to secure the talent of the top in-state kids, and Wright is definitely listening.
“Minnesota is close to home which is good and they have been recruiting me a lot,” said Wright. “I talk to their coaches all the time and they think I could be a good fit in their up and down system.”
Another school really picking up the interest is Xavier.
About the Musketeers, Wright said, “They need a 2017 point guard and I talk to Coach (Travis) Steele and Coach (Chris) Mack and they are great guys. Also J.P. (Macura) played for D1 Minnesota so I know him pretty well, and they speak highly of the program.”
Also in Southwest Ohio, the Dayton Flyers are looking for a point guard and have stayed in very close contact with Wright.
“Dayton is a really good school,” said Wright. “I talk to them five times per week. I like how they get out and run and I like them a lot.”
At this point Iowa hasn’t offered Wright, but he says the Hawkeyes have told him they will be keeping a close eye on him this July.
“They said they are seeing me a lot in July,” said Wright. “They need a point guard in 2017 and they think I can be that guy, so they are planning to watch me a lot.”
At the moment Wright is in no hurry to make a decision, but doesn’t have a specific timeframe for when he wants to make a commitment.
