It was a big spring for Thomas Kithier. Playing with The Family he had a chance to emerge on a big stage during AAU, and then recently was one of the better forwards at the Nike Elite 100. Now the 2018 prospect is picking up big offers, and is continuing to field more calls.
“Overall I think things went well,” said Kithier of the spring. “I think I played well in the EYBL and it showed because I picked up some offers.”
Michigan, Michigan State, and Xavier all had strong interest in Kithier coming into the spring, and a lot of teams have joined them, several extending official scholarship offers.
“My phone has been going off,” said Kithier of the recruiting attention. “On Wednesday I got 15 calls. I had offers from Oakland, Detroit, and Toledo. I have picked up offers from MSU, DePaul, Milwaukee, and Duquesne.”
The most recent offer for Kithier came from Michigan State. The Spartans offered after seeing him at the Izzo Shootout, and for Kithier it was a big pickup.
“It means a lot to get that offer,” said Kithier. “I’ve liked Michigan State for a while. I didn’t think it was going to happen. (Tom) Izzo was at three of the six games (at the Izzo Shootout). Then when he wasn’t there, an assistant was always there so they saw every one of my games.”
In terms of what he likes about Michigan State, Kithier says, “I like Coach Izzo. He is an honest guy and I like how it is close to home.”
Like Michigan State, Michigan is also picking up the interest in Kithier. The Wolverines haven’t offered yet, but one could be coming.
“John Beilein has called a couple of times now,” said Kithier of Michigan. “I am going to their team camp coming up, and (Beilein) wants me to take the campus tour and do a full unofficial visit. That’s what he told me he would like, and I’m looking forward to it.”
While the two in-state schools might be putting on the hardest sell, DePaul recently offered and the Blue Demons are working to get an unofficial visit from Kithier as well.
“Coach (Dave) Leitao called me and told me on the phone and told me he wants to visit in August,” said Kithier of the Blue Demons. “I don’t know too much about them, but I know they are in the Big East and that they are an upcoming program.”
For now Kithier has no specific timeframe for a decision, and is continuing to gain information about all of the schools recruiting him.
