Four-star combo guard Paul Scruggs really opened eyes with his play at the NBPA Top 100 Camp. Now Scruggs continues to work to make his transition to being a point guard as he attends the Steph Curry Select Camp.
“It is really good to be here,” said Scruggs of the camp. “It is my second time here. It has been a learning experience. I am picking up new things every day.”
As someone who is trying to become a point guard after being a scorer his entire life, Scruggs says he has learned a lot from working with the two time NBA MVP.
“It helps me a lot,” Scruggs noted. “I am learning how to come off of ball screens, how to read screens, and just how to do the simple things that a point guard has to do in order to be effective.”
On the recruiting trail Scruggs has a list of eight schools with Indiana, Xavier, Michigan State, Louisville, Ohio State, Illinois, Kansas, and Kentucky remaining in the mix.
Recently Ohio State offered, and for Scruggs that was big.
“That was a big offer,” Scruggs noted of the Buckeyes. “It send the message that they would love to have me. They think I would fit in really well with them and it is a school I’m interested in.”
The school that has been recruiting Scruggs the longest is Indiana, and he maintains that he has a tremendous relationship with Tom Crean and his staff.
“Me and Coach Crean have a wonderful relationship,” said Scruggs. “It is my hometown school, and he has just build a good bond with me and my coaches and parents.”
While he hasn’t come out and set a true timeline, the thought is Scruggs could decide shortly after the July evaluation period, and he says another visit to Indiana will take place before he makes his choice.
“I will definitely get down there before I make my decision,” Scruggs reiterated.
Along with Indiana, Scruggs has been a frequent guest on Xavier’s campus recently, and says that he is building a strong bond with the coaching staff there.
“They’ve been hitting me up every day asking how I am doing, asking when I leave for camps and stuff like that, and just staying in touch,” said Scruggs. “It is just a good relationship.”
For now Scruggs is set to finish out July with the Indy Hoosiers and his hope is to close out a long AAU career with a win in the Under Armour Finals before focusing on making his college commitment in the fall.
