Point guard Daron Russell had some great highs and a bad low that ended up with his team losing after he lost his footing going to the rim as time expired on Wednesday night. Still his overall performance was impressive.
A diminutive guard, Russell has tremendous quickness, and then also has a good feel for how to play the game. For the game on Wednesday night Russell finished with 17 points, 9 assists, and 3 steals.
One thing that was really impressive is that Russell made both of his shots from distance, and overall looked very comfortable shooting as well as attacking off of the dribble. Because of his size he will never be great at finishing around the rim, but he still does a good job of getting into the lane and making solid decisions.
With there being a shortage of true point guards, look for Russell to continue to pick up interest as the month goes on. Right now a lot of coaches are making him a priority to evaluate this July, and at least on night one he didn’t disappoint.
Some of the coaches watching Russell included Rhode Island, Dayton, Temple, and LaSalle. Look for Russell to continue to gain interest and for more head coaches to make a call on whether to pick things up with his recruitment or not based on his play this month.
