Last July Matthew Mayer showed promise playing in an off site gym with a local AAU team at the Great American Shootout.
In the spring he switched to play for the Houston Hoops. After not playing big minutes in the spring and averaging just 3.9 points per game, Mayer has arguably been the Hoops best player at the Nike Peach Jam.
Through four games at Nike’s premier event, Mayer, a 6-foot-7 wing, is leading the Hoops in scoring with 14.8 points per game.
A skilled player, Mayer can score the ball in a variety of ways. He’s efficient and in a Friday afternoon game, scored with jumpers from mid-range and three. His percentage from deep isn’t great, but he has good shot mechanics and it’s clear he’s a shot maker. To go with making jumpers, he also picked his spots to drive the ball and score at the rim.
