The run with the Indy Hoosiers for Paul Scruggs came to an end in Las Vegas. For a team that has been together since grade school, it was a great ride, but now all the players are set to take the next step. For Scruggs that means setting visits and focusing on his college decision.
“It was actually an awesome experience,” said Scruggs of the summer. “Being with my team, and being with Coach Mike (Peterson) for 10 years, playing with Zach Gunn and Kris Wilkes, it was just a great experience.”
Recently Scruggs set up visits to Indiana, Xavier, Michigan State, Illinois, and Connecticut.
The visit process will begin on Monday with an unofficial trip to Indiana.
About the visit, Scruggs said, “I just want to learn more about the school and the campus. I want to be able to connect with the players as well.”
He continued about the Hoosiers, “I just like their style of play. They play fast and let their guards go. I just want to know about their business school and everything like that.”
Following the unofficial to Indiana will be a weekend official visit to Xavier.
When it comes to the Musketeers, Scruggs said, “Me and Coach (Travis) Steele have built a very strong relationship. Me and Coach (Chris) Mack text on and off, and we have a very strong relationship.”
He went on, “They tell me they need a big point guard, and they think I’d be the perfect fit in their offense.”
Following the Xavier official will be an August 13 official to Michigan State.
When it comes to the Spartans, Scruggs said, “The relationship I have with them is very good as well. They say they need a big guard and that I fit their style of play. They say I have the motor that really fits them.”
Scruggs has made it clear that his desire is to be a point guard. Michigan State took class of 2016 point guard Cassius Winston, but Scruggs says that will have no impact on him.
About Winston’s presence, Scruggs said, “It just means I have to work harder, that is all that means.”
Scruggs’ visit plan includes a week break between Michigan State and Connecticut. He is set to visit Connecticut on August 26.
UConn is the only school out of driving distance, but Scruggs says that isn’t an issue.
“It’s really not a factor at all,” said Scruggs of distance from home. “I am just looking for the school that fits me.”
What does appeal to Scruggs about the Huskies is the success they have had in the recent past with their guards.
“It is a huge factor for me,” noted Scruggs. “It seems like every single guard they have had has been a great player and has gone to the NBA.”
Following Connecticut is an official visit set to Illinois on September 3. Currently it is the final visit that Scruggs has set up.
About the Illini, he said, “I like the coaching staff. They are real cool guys. Coach (John) Groce and Coach (Jamall) Walker both hit me up every other day asking how I’m doing and how my family is doing, so I like them a lot.”
For now Scruggs says the plan is to make all of his planned visits, and he says he knows making a decision from this group isn’t going to be easy.
“It’s going to be very tough,” said Scruggs of a decision. “I know I will just have to keep my composure throughout and make the right decision for me.”
