July Was Key For Grimsley

The Dylan Grimsley story isn't quite rags to riches but it is Division II offers to outstanding mid-major interest. In just one summer, Grimsley was able to garner Division I offers.

The Martin Bros. Select team enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in the summer of 2003. Each player on their team raised his level of recruitment during their run, and one player in particular actually raised his recruitment an entire division.

"I had interest before and zero offers except for some Division II's and the first day back I think I had four or five [Division I] offers," senior small forward Dylan Grimsley said. The 6-4 Grimsley had a blast playing ball and the colleges enjoyed watching him.

Instead of Division II offers, he's got a C-USA program and four prime mid-major schools chasing him.

"Right now my top five who have offered, in no particular order are, UNC-Wilmington, Western Kentucky, Indiana State, Miami-OH." Grimsley visits UNCW August 30, Western Kentucky Sept. 6 and Tulane on the 13th.

This coming weekend, he'll venture to Indiana State for an unofficial visit. "I have three of them that I favor more but without going on the visit I have no idea. I wouldn't really say that there is one way ahead of the others."

Indiana State, UNC-W and Western Kentucky stand on solid ground. But, Grimsley is quick to point out that Tulane is right there as well.

"I need to a good fit with the coaches – the coaches are real important to me – and the campus and the atmosphere and the arena I'm going to be playing in.

"There was a time where I thought distance would be a problem and I wanted to stay close to home but I realized I have to go far away and I think I'm fine with it."

There was also a time when Division II's thought they could snare him but that time has passed.
