2017 point guard Isaiah Washington pulled the trigger for Minnesota on Sunday.
"I’m officially a Gopher," Washington told Scout minutes after giving Richard Pitino the word.
"It just felt like a right place," he added. "A lot of players start off with one coach and I wanted to start my own franchise at a big time school."
Washington picked Minnesota over interest from Seton Hall, Syracuse and a host of other high major programs.
Washington and Minnesota assistant Kimani Young had a strong connection that dates back to Young's AAU days when he ran the prestigious New Heights travel team club. Washington has played in the program through his high school career.
"It played a big part," Washington said of their relationship. "They’ve been recruiting me hard since my freshman year."
Through the long recruitment, Washington and Pitino grew close as well.
"We speak on a daily basis," Washington said. "He’s kind of like a close friend."
Heading into the visit, Washington wasn't sure where he was going to go to college, but he said it hit him on Saturday.
"It just felt like the right thing to do," he said. "I just went with my gut and I feel good about it."
Washington is Minnesota's first commitment of the 2017 class.
