The Houston Cougars have been looking to build up their roster with a local talent, and on Sunday evening they got great news with the addition of Fabian White. A power forward with high upside, White picked the Cougars after making an official visit to the school.
"Coach (Kelvin) Sampson has a vision for the program that I love," said White about why he picked the Cougars. "He feels like Houston can accomplish great things as long as he has the right players, and after talking to him and the staff there is no doubt that I can be one of those players."
At nearly 6-foot-8 with a unique skill set, White attracted interest from schools such as SMU, Memphis, Boise State, Iowa State, and Arkansas before choosing the Cougars.
When it comes to how the Cougars plan to use White, he says there are no boundaries to what they will let him do on the court.
"Coach is just going to use me as a basketball player," said White. "He said he is going to help me improve my range, and just let me play my game. Coach Sampson wants me to be someone who can either post up a smaller defender and score, or take a bigger defender off the dribble and score. Basically he wants me to be a matchup nightmare."
In the end though White is a competitor, and it was his faith in Sampson's ability to build a winner that made the difference.
"They have a tradition of winning there, and I know Coach Sampson is going to bring it back," said White. "He is a great coach, and I absolutely believe in his vision to building a team that can win a national championship."
This is the second commitment for the Cougars who also have Mike Adewunmi in the fold.
