Four-star combo guard Darryl Morsell has been extremely busy with his recruitment recently, and things are about to really pick up this upcoming week. Two in-home visits have already taken place, and two more are set to take place as his official visits are about ready to get going.
“I just had an in-home with Maryland and Virginia Tech and a few more in-home visits are coming up this week,” said Morsell. “It has just been crazy, but it is nice to know I am wanted by those schools.”
This week the schools coming in to see Morsell are Notre Dame (Monday) and Villanova (Wednesday).
Most recently it was Maryland and Virginia Tech. Mark Turgeon and his staff came in on Friday and then Virginia Tech followed on Saturday.
Maryland tried to make a big impression by bringing not only the full staff, but a big Maryland truck as well.
About the visit, Morsell said, “Coach Bino (Ranson) called me before they got there and told me to come outside. I saw the bus outside and it was cool, the neighbors were out there trying to figure out what was going on, it was a lot of fun.”
He continued about the in-home visit with the Terps, “The visit went well. Coach Turgeon and the other coaches reiterated why I should go there. They keep emphasizing that Maryland is the home state school and they are trying to keep Baltimore kids home. That is their main pitch, and they feel that I could come in and help the team.”
Coming in after Maryland, Buzz Williams and Virginia Tech also made an impression.
“Coach Buzz is one of a kind,” said Morsell. “That man is passionate and intense. His style is different from most of the other coaches. I know he wants what is best for me. His demeanor and drive excites me. He is just crazy and I think he would be a great coach for me.”
Up next is a lot of time with Notre Dame. Mike Brey and his staff come in on Monday to meet with Morsell and his family, and then over the weekend it is time for his official visit to South Bend.
“It has been good to get to know the staff,” said Morsell of his budding relationship with Notre Dame. “Coach Brey and the assistants are real good dudes. Eric Atkins is the video coordinator and he is from Mt. St. Joe as well, so I have looked up to him.”
He continued about the official visit, “I’m just going down there to see the campus. I’ve never seen it all, so I want to see the campus and the environment, and just get to know the coaches and players better.”
Villanova will also make their pitch before the Notre Dame official visit. They then follow up with an official visit of their own the next weekend.
Morsell has made a few unofficial visits to the Villanova campus, and current Villanova player Phil Booth was once a high school mentor to Morsell.
About the Wildcats, Morsell said, “I am just to continuing to get to know the coaches better. It is basically the same thing with them as the other schools.”
He continued, “I’ve been to their campus and I really like it, but on the official visit I want to get acclimated with the players and build a relationship. Also my mom hasn’t been there so she wants to get up there and see the campus and get to know the coaches better.”
In terms of a final decision, Morsell doesn’t want to limit himself in any way.
“I don’t know when it will happen,” said Morsell. “I just feel like when the time is right I will try to make the best decision for me. It could be this weekend or January or February. Whenever the time is right I will make my decision.”
