Michigan native Jamal Cain had a breakout summer this year with The Family playing in the Nike EYBL. Cain, who plays both the small forward and power forward position, had a host of schools watching him, and he is about ready to get going with his visit process.
“Jamal is going to Marquette this weekend,” said Cain’s AAU Coach Mychal Covington. “After that he has a visit to Georgia, and then also he has a very high interest in Cincinnati. Note date is set in stone yet, but we are working on that.”
A school that has consistently been on Cain is Marquette. The Golden Eagles tracked him all summer long, and continue to stay in regular contact.
“When Jamal goes on the visit there he just wants to get a feel for the school,” said Covington. “Basically he likes everything that they have said throughout the recruiting process, but he wants to get a clear picture. I think he has a good relationship with the staff already and he likes the idea of a smaller campus.”
Covington continued about Marquette, “One thing that stands out is the way Coach (Steve Wojciehowski) has recruited him. Coach Wojo has recruited him as hard as Coach Stan (Johnson) has. For a kid to have a head coach recruiting you as hard as an assistant, that says a lot about their interest level.”
After Cain sees Marquette he is going to make his way to Georgia. According to Covington, Cain wants to see what Athens is all about.
“Basically it is the same thing as Marquette, he wants to get a clear picture of the school,” said Covington. “I think he wants to get to know Coach (Mark) Fox better. He has a great opinion of Coach (Jonas) Hayes, and he just wants to see the campus and get to know Coach Fox better.”
He continued about Georgia, “Also when Jamal goes there he will be looking to get a good feel for their development and just their vision for him as a player. I know he likes the SEC and Georgia has done a very good job of recruiting him, so it is about getting a feel for the campus and the coaching staff.”
Also the Cincinnati Bearcats are really picking things up with Cain, and their strong interest recently has really opened up his eyes.
“Cincinnati was on him early, but then they kind of dropped off some,” explained Covington. “Recently however they asked if they could get back involved and they have put in a lot of effort. They showed up on the first day they were allowed out and met with him. That showed a lot about what they think of Jamal, so he is working to set a visit there.”
For now Covington says that Cain doesn’t have a specific plan for when he will make a decision, but he does always give his players on piece of advice.
“I tell all of the kids who play for me that things are going to look great on the visit,” explained Covington. “I tell them that they should go home for a few days and sleep on it and let the emotion wear off. When they know where they want to go I feel they should decide, but I don’t want any kid making an emotional decision.”
