Washington Picks Tech
Lubbock (TX) Monterey SG Josh Washington has joined the ranks of the committed players. Washington picked Bob Knight's Texas Tech program.
"It's done, I told them Friday," Washington said. "I'm going to go to Tech. It was a long process so it's kind of relief." Washington has not yet had a chance to tell Knight face-to-face, but he intends to do so today. "Coach Knight is coming back from his speaking thing and I am going up there [on Tuesday] to kind of make it official."
Washington said that he listened to Oklahoma and Tennessee, but had a good idea where he wanted to go. "Tech was always No. 1 in my heart."
In picking the Red Raiders, Washington became the first high school player to join the Red Raiders since Knight took over last year. He understands the significance of that title. "Actually, it means a lot. I was really the only guard that they were recruiting in Texas. I'm the first high school recruit. I'll be the first to be able to step in as a freshman."
Washington's parents, fixtures at his AAU games all summer long, are certainly excited he's staying local. "They are real, real, real happy because I am going to be at home."
Last year, Washington averaged 21 points. He's playing wide receiver this fall for Monterey's football team.
