One of the most impressive long term prospects in the 2019 class is Vernon Carey. The son of a former NFL standout, Carey’s future is big time on the hardwood, and college coaches are stopping by his school after seeing Carey impress in a big way during the spring and summer.
“I think the summer went pretty well. I am now just working on my ball handling, my defense, and being a leader,” said Carey.
A big bodied power forward with skill, Carey is capable of playing inside and out and has a lot of versatility on both ends of the floor. His ability to shoot from outside or rebound on the low block has a lot excited with his upside, and college coaches are making sure to let it be known he is a priority even at a young age.
“Miami, Virginia, UCF, and Tennessee have all been by the school,” said Carey.
Miami is the school that Carey is most familiar with. Carey’s dad starred for the Hurricanes on the football field, and he lives within easy driving distance of the school.
About Miami, Carey said, “They are a really good school. My dad obviously played there so I am familiar with the school. Also Coach (Jim) Larranaga is recruiting me hard and says he wants me to be a part of the program, so that is a good thing.”
Also Virginia is starting to pick up the interest in Carey, and he is just beginning to learn about the ACC program.
“I have met Coach (Jason) Williford and he is a really nice guy,” noted Carey. “I don’t know too much about them, but they are always one of the best programs in the country, so I like that.”
For now Carey says he is in no hurry to make a college decision, and he plans to see as much as he can before issuing any kind of commitment.
