We spoke with Chris Ayer, 6-10 C Flowing Wells (Ariz.) High, today and he confirmed his recent commitment to Loyola Marymount. Chris told us that the other finalists were Northern Arizona and UTEP.
An interesting aspect to the Ayer recruiting story, though, is the fact that turned down overtures from higher profile schools, including a few schools in the Pac-10 and Conference USA.
We asked Chris his reason for not responding to those overtures. After all, what typically happens when a fairly low-profile recruit sees a spike in recruiting interest from high major schools is the recruits drops the lower level schools and ends up choosing from the high majors.
Chris had an interesting response. "It was mainly about loyalty," he said. "Loyola, as well as NAU and UTEP, had been on me from the beginning. I wanted to be loyal to the schools that had been loyal to me."
Ayer is the third player to commit to the Lions in recent weeks, joining John Haywood and Brandon Worthy. After turning in a better than expected season last year, Steve Aggers and his staff (Brian Priebe, Byron Jenson and Dedrique Taylor) are doing a terrific job on the recruiting trail.
