Prep Showcase: Curtis Haywood emerges as high major wing prospect

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- 2017 wing Curtis Haywood emerged at the National Prep Showcase as a potential high major recruit.

Every year the National Prep Showcase provides a stage for the nation’s best post-graduate and prep players to play in front of college coaches and a throng of media.

On Saturday, Curtis Haywood II, a native of Oklahoma, took full advantage of the setting, pumping in five three-pointers and leading Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster to a win over NTSI.

“I’m doing everything,” Haywood said when asked to describe his game. “I don’t just stick to one aspect of my game, I try to do everything to help my team win. I don’t focus on just scoring or defense, but my defense helps my whole game.”

It was Haywood’s shooting that immediately stood out, but at 6-foot-5, he also showed an impressive feel for the game, toughness and gave good effort on the defensive end of the floor.

A somewhat unknown prospect, Haywood opted against playing AAU basketball over the spring the summer. Instead, he got in the gym with his dad and tried to determine his next move.

“I just worked out with my dad,” he said. “I didn’t know if I was going to commit to college, go JUCO or do another year. I was just working on my game and letting God guide me.”

On the recruiting front, Haywood currently has scholarship offers from Tulsa and Georgia Tech.

“They are pretty good,” he said when asked about Georgia Tech. “I like them. I’m interested in them. I’m just seeing what I can get it.”

“I like them,” Haywood said about Tulsa. “They are close to home. I haven’t been far from home before. This is new to me, but being close to home by my family would be great.”

Haywood, who has yet to take an official visit, also has interest from IndianaIllinoisGeorge MasonArkansas and Siena.
