Smith Surprises UNC With News's No. 13 prospect in the Class of 2004 is off the board. During a telephone call with Roy Williams on Thursday, Smith got some big news off his chest.

It started out as the Tar Heels weekly phone call to J.R. Smith. The No. 13 prospect in the country hadn't told the Tar Heels he had any news for them, he just answered the phone.

Smith said Roy Williams was telling him about a recent stint in Puerto Rico when the commitment took place. "[Coach Williams] asked if I had any good news for him," Smith said. "I said ‘I'm coming.' He asked if I was coming for a visit and I said that I was ‘coming for school.'"

Smith, a professed life-long North Carolina fan, picked the Tar Heels over North Carolina State, Pittsburgh and Connecticut. He didn't even need an official visit to reach his decision.

"It felt like it was the right time and definitely the right school for me. Actually it was [an easy decision] because I've been down there for the last three years. It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be."

UNC is piling on the commitments. Williams has pledges from three recruits, each a member of our Top 100. Marvin Williams checks in at No. 4 in the class and JamesOn Curry is listed at No. 62."
