Chris Mack has signed an impressive 2017 recruiting haul that currently ranks No. 8 in Scout’s class rankings.
Xavier's class is full of talented wing prospects, with Paul Scruggs and Naji Marshall ranking the highest. But the Musketeers lone big man signee, Kentrevious Jones, put together quite a showing at the Holiday Hoopsgiving event this past weekend.
In a loss to Norcross (Ga.) High, Jones, a 6-foot-10, 260-pound center, scored 27 points on 13-for-19 shooting. He also reeled in eight rebounds and blocked a shot.
“I feel like I played good,” Jones said. “I came out here trying to show everybody what I can do because I lost 30 pounds. Nobody was expecting a lot out of me today, so I came to show out.”
If Jones’ goal was to prove himself on Saturday, he did that in a big way and the improved conditioning certainly factored in.
Jones was aggressive when he was got touches on the block, scored well with his right hand and played well through contact. He also knocked down a pair of mid-range jump shots and looking confident doing it.
“I can move a lot more,” he said when pressed on his offensive production. “I’m quicker. I get up and down the floor a lot quicker. My moves have gotten a lot quicker too.”
So while Xavier has a host of wings with serious potential, they also are getting a talented post player that appears motivated to get better and is already doing so.
