One of the best 2019 centers on the West Coast is Raymond Hawkins, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound post from Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O’Dowd.
Hawkins has decent size, wide shoulders, long arms, plus athleticism and plays extremely hard. He’s a good rebounder who can score on the offensive glass, with his hook shot or by taking opponents off the dribble.
“I try to bring a lot of energy to my teammates,” Hawkins said. “I’m very athletic, can put the ball on the court, can hit a jump hook or attack the rim. I want to be able to dribble and shoot like a guard.”
Four schools have offered Hawkins early, as Nevada, Montana, Wyoming and Pacific have all come through with offers.
While Hawkins says he’s wide open and is a fan of college basketball in general, he does like watching a couple teams.
There’s a long way to go before Hawkins’ recruitment becomes serious but he has an idea of what he’s looking for in a school.
“I’m looking for a coach who I’m comfortable with who I can trust,” Hawkins said. “I want a school that is about basketball but more importantly is about business and education.”
