2018 recruit Brandon Slater already has a host of scholarship offers and a big reputation, especially in basketball circles in D.C.
But over the weekend at the National HS Hoops Festival Slater, a 6-foot-5, slender wing prospect, showed he’s making the move from prospect over to player.
Slater was aggressive on offense and showed he could score the ball in a variety of ways. Slater got to the rim and proved to be a good finished once he got there. He completed plays through contact and adjusted his shots at the rim. Slater is also confident in his jump shot and he’s certainly capable of getting hot from distance.
A competitive player, Slater played hard on both ends of the floor and is tracking as a good defender. He was active and also did a good job of going to the glass.
Slater is currently ranked as the No. 31 overall prospect and he certainly proved himself worthy of that ranking.
Q&A with Brandon Slater
Do you feel like you got to do a little more this year?
Definitely, last year’s I could get away with a couple things but no with people they look up to me and that’s really different so I have to play with a different mindset and I have to be like a leader and be vocal.
When you’re at your best what’re you doing?
When I’m really good I’m knocking down my shot’s, getting to the basket, I’m feeding my teammates, I’m hitting my pull-up, I’m playing defense on their best player so they don’t score, I’m getting blocks, getting steals, everything.
How’s the whole recruiting process going for you?
It’s great right now. It’s a lot of schools and some new schools coming in, but it’s a lot of the same schools .
What’re they doing to prioritize you?
They keep in contact with me, text me every day saying like ‘hey what’s up?’ and ‘watch the game’ and stuff.
You visited Villanova most recently, how was that?
Villanova was the most recent. It was nice. It was really nice. The atmosphere, the fans, the fans didn’t even know who I was and they were just like ‘hey you must be a recruit’ and later I found out that me and him were basically from the same neighborhood.
Is there any school you like or becoming a favorite for you?
No not yet, but I mean there’s more school coming and also schools that are always there.
Is this something you’re starting to look at now or put it off until later down the road?
I’m definitely like making sure I focus on the season at the same time. The time is getting closer and closer so I’m trying to single out the certain schools I like and fit my style of play.
