Arizona State offers three SoCal teammates, brothers

Arizona State offered three teammates who happen to also be brothers on Monday in Devante and Devonaire Doutrive along with Deschon Winston.

One of the stories of the high school basketball season in Southern California has been the play of Van Nuys (Calif.) Birmingham, and most notably its three leaders in 2017 shooting guard Devante Doutrive, 2017 point guard Deschon Winston and 2018 small forward Devonaire Doutrive.

On Monday, all three prospects were offered by Arizona State according to Laurian Watkins, who not only coaches the trio with Pro Skills Sports Academy but also is the father of Winston and guardian of the Doutrive brothers.

The offers were a big deal for the family.

“Getting offers from ASU is a blessing,” Watkins said. “They all were able to go into Birmingham together and turn it around and maybe it can be a similar situation.

“The Pac-12 is one of the best conferences in the country with a ton of NBA guys coming out of there. I think it's a great situation.”

Devante has used his senior season to propel his stock as one of the nation’s top unsigned seniors. He’s an aggressive and tough shooting guard who is a born scorer yet has really improved as a passer as well.

Devonaire is a playmaking wing with a significant upside. He’s got good size and length and can really pass and slash. Deschon is a point guard whose best attribute is his shooting ability; he’s got perimeter range and can also score off the dribble.

The opportunity for the trio to play together in college is a big deal for all of them

“It's definitely a school that was on the wish list of all three kids when we started this process,” Watkins said. “It was a good day in my household that's for sure.

“Coach (Bobby) Hurley comes from a winning program and they did some good things at Buffalo. They have Remy Martin [signed] and getting three more good players from same area could be really big for them.”

Taking a visit to Tempe is next on the family’s agenda.

“Everything just came all at once so the kids will have to go there and make sure it's a place they can fit athletically, academically and socially,” Watkins said. “We'll take a trip there in the next week or so and then have a serious conversation about what to do next.”
