Rick Pitino is off to a quick start in 2018, holding pledges from two backcourt players ranked among the top 32 recruits in the country. Courtney Ramey, a five-star recruit, is an aggressive guard that has a good blend of facilitating and scoring, plus has potential on the defensive end. His future counterpart is 6-foot-4 guard Anfernee Simons, who checks in at No. 32 overall. Simons is a gifted scorer that puts up points in bunches.
Bruce Pearl and his staff have just one pledge in the 2018 class, but it's a big one, as top 10 power forward E.J. Montgomery is already on board. A standout at Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler, Montgomery showed improvements during his senior season. He's mobile, runs end to end, has a good set of hands and can finish off plays close to the rim. Montgomery has a lot of upside and is a great start to a recruiting class.
Notable Commitments: E.J. Montgomery (7)
Arkansas is one of four schools with two 2018 top 100 commitments at this stage. All three of Mike Anderson's pledges play in the same in AAU program -- Arkansas Hawks. Perry is a strong, tough inside player that will rebound and finish close to the rim, while Henderson has a little more versatility and can play some away from the rim. Both have shown quite a bit of potential for 2018 recruits. Their third pledge is 6-foot-3 scorer Isaiah Joe.
Roy Williams and his staff targeted a pair of in-state prospects -- Rechon Black and Coby White -- early and went ahead and secured pledges from them. Black, who moved to Montverde (Fla.) Academy for his junior season, is a long, versatile perimeter player with the ability to play multiple positions. White, on the other hand, is a pure scorer. He's aggressive, stays in attack mode and is capable of getting baskets in bunches. The Heels are off to a strong start with a pair of four-star recruits on board.
#5 Ohio State
Thad Matta and company got things going early in 2018 and have a trio of in-state pledges -- Dane Goodwin, Darius Bazley and Justin Ahrens. Goodwin is a shot maker from distance with good size, as is Ahrens. Bazley, a native of Cincinnati, will bring athleticism, skill, length and versatility to Ohio State's program.
#6 St. Louis
Since arriving at St. Louis, Travis Ford and his staff have made some waves on the recruiting trail, reeling in a top 50 recruit in 2017. In 2018 things are off to a strong start as well with Scout's No. 41 player Carte'Are Gordon and Fred Thatch already on board. Gordon is a physical, specimen that impacts the game with his rebounding, toughness and ability to score from close range.
Lorenzo Romar has the second Porter brother on board in 2018. Although Jontay Porter told Scout in mid-January that there's a chance that he will reclassify to 2017, he hasn't decided yet, so we'll keep him here. Porter had an impressive junior season, looking trimmer, more bouncy and more confident with his offense, especially around the goal. There's also value in his ability to step out and shoot from long distance.
Notable Commitments: Jontay Porter (43)
Tyler Herro, a native of Wisconsin, opted to make an early college decision and pledged to Greg Gard, Wisconsin. A talented scorer, Herro ranks as the No. 44 overall prospect and the No. 5 shooting guard in the 2018 class. Herro has solid size for the position, shoots the ball well from long-range and can score it from mid-range and in as well.
Notable Commitments: Tyler Herro (44)
Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery did a great job locking up top 50, in-state prospect Joe Weiskamp early. Weiskamp is the Hawkeyes lone pledge, but it's a tremendous start. Weiskamp ranks as the No. 12 small forward and at 6-foot-6 is a talented scorer, shotmaker from long range.
Notable Commitments: Joe Wieskamp (48)
Minnesota had success on and off the court this year. On it the Gophers reeled off 23 wins, off of it they picked up an early pledge from No. 64 Daniel Oturu, a native of Minnesota. Oturu, the No. 8 center, is a good athlete. He's mobile, runs the floor well, does a good job of protecting the rim and is a willing rebounder. Oturu is a very good start to the Gophers 2018 class.
Notable Commitments: Daniel Oturu (64)
