Williams Picks School

On Friday, Deron Williams became the fourth player to commit to Bill Self's Fighting Illini program this year. The Illini now have commitments from two guards and two forwards in the Class of 2002.

Williams Picks Illinois

Guards were committing to colleges faster than The Colony's Deron Williams could make visits. On Thursday, Jarrett Jack picked Georgia Tech. With the Yellow Jackets out of the picture, Williams figured it was a good time to make his college decision.

"He gave his commitment to Illinois," Denise Smith, Deron's mother told InsidersHoops.com.

The Illini had been recruiting Williams for a long time. With the additions of Williams and Dee Brown, it looks like Bill Self is going to steal a page from his days at Tulsa where the coach simply played guards and didn't worry about putting position labels on them. With Brown and Williams in the same backcourt, the Illini have a unique mix. Brown supplies the speed, Williams steadies the ship and they both can light it up from deep.

Williams is ranked No. 46 in the post-summer rankings. He played on the AAU circuit with the Fort Worth Lions and actually helped them spring an upset of eventual champion Long Island Panthers in the very first game at the Big Time.
