Matt Mitchell

Second Evaluation Period: Breakout Performers

Scout's basketball recruiting staff was stationed at the adidas Gauntlet, Nike EYBL and Under Armour Association for the second April evaluation period that concluded on Sunday. Who were the breakout performers from each main circuit?

After signing a Letter of Intent with Cal State Fullerton in the fall, Matt Mitchell made a big jump as a prospect as a senior. He shed several pounds and transitioned from a hybrid forward to a a more perimeter based attacker given his increased mobility and athleticism to go with better ball skills an shooting ability. Mitchell has requested out of his Letter of Intent and plans on reclassifying to 2018 and going to prep school this coming season. Given the fact he's a late bloomer who is just starting to show what he's capable of, it can be expected that high majors will be all over the DreamVision small forward.

Recruiting: Mitchell's recruitment is wide open while he's in the process of getting out of his Letter of Intent

The DreamVision center showed he's well on his way in the transformation from prospect to player this weekend. Bryan Penn-Johnson has terrific size at 6-foot-11, very long arms, soft hands and touch and after fighting through injuries, is in the best shape of his career. He's moving extremely well, playing hard, showing promise as a rim protector and rebounder and still has plenty of upside. In a class which has a serious shortage of centers, Penn-Johnson's upside is going to make him a guy several high majors will end up prioritizing.

Scout hasn't done a ton of evalauting of the 2020 class but one of the most impressive prospects at this stage is MarJon Beauchamp. The 6-foot-5 Seattle wing has good size, extremely long arms and is filled with upside. Beauchamp is a plus athlete who should only improve athletically as he adds strength to a frame which will be able to hold plenty more of it in time. He can score with his jumper, floater or by attacking the basket. There are several talented young prospects from the Pacific Northwest but Beauchamp has one of the highest upsides of the group.

Recruiting: Washington, Cal Poly, Seattle, Eastern Washington

He plays on the A.J. Bouye Elite, and not too many people knew about him before the weekend, but Devin Vassell is a high upside wing with a big time ability to score the basketball. At this point in time Vassell really needs to add strength, but he is tough going to the rim and finishing through contact, and also has a very nice looking shot from the outside. Already a solid athlete, Vassell should continue to get more athletic as he gains strength, and high-major coaches are beginning to take notice of what he brings to the court.

Recruiting: Florida State has been the most active high-major with MiamiUCF, Memphis Tigers and Rhode Island

http://www.scout.com/player/216913-filip-pertrusev?s=75

A native of Serbia, Filip Pertrusev showed off what he is capable of this weekend. Pertrusev is a dynamic pick and pop big man who has a very nice shooting stroke from the outside. Also he is fairly skilled with the dribble and can attack bad closeouts. He isn't much of a rim protector, and needs to be more active on the glass defensively, but in a class light on bigs, Pertrusev is someone who a lot of people are taking note of.

Recruiting: Pertrusev is currently committed to Hartford

He still has a long way to go before he is going to be ready to contribute in a high-major conference, but Marcus Bingham showed off his impressive potential this weekend in the EYBL. Running with the Indy Heat, Bingham proved he has the ability to pick and pop from three, is a high level athlete, and then has tremendous length at 6-foot-10. Still Bingham needs to get a lot stronger, but he is the ideal redshirt candidate at a high-major program who will have all-league potential by the time he is an upperclassman.

Recruiting: Bingham came into the weekend with an offer from Washington, and since then PurdueXavier, and Butler joined the Huskies with an offer

One of the prospects that has caught our eye over the past two weekends is 6-foot-2 point guard Jaelin Llewellyn, of Virginia Episcopal School. Llewellyn has a quick first step and game changing type speed. He's aggressive and finds ways into the paint, but picks his spots and makes good decisions. Llewellyn also impressed as a passer and a shot maker. Through eight games in the Gauntlet, Llewellyn is averaging 8.6 points and 4.1 assists a game, while shooting 45.5-percent from behind the three-point stripe on a Team Loaded VA squad that is loaded with prospects.

After a pedestrian first weekend with Basketball University, 2019 big man Will Baker put together a solid weekend in Atlanta in front of a host of interested high major coaches. At 6-foot-10, Baker is oozing with potential and the light appears to be flickering on. Baker showed good mobility and impressive footwork, as well as impressive hands and good touch around the basket. Through four games this past weekend, Baker scored 31 points and reeled in 28 rebounds.

Despite seeing his least productive game of the weekend, it was easy to see the talent M33M Elite gaurd Malik Riddle possesses. A 2018 recruit, Riddle is equipped with long arms, good athleticism and a versatile scoring attack. Through seven games in the Gauntlet, Riddle is averaging 13.3 points and 4.4 rebounds. He's also connected on 10 of his 25 three-pointer attempts.
