In fact, Alvarez already was able to get his feet wet as a focal piece on the New Jersey Demons this past summer and several east coast schools have taken notice.
Alvarez took his first official visit to Rhode Island two weeks ago, but the Rams have since gotten a commitment from forward Will Daniels and are out of the picture. Now the 6-8, 205-pound Alvarez will head to Dayton this weekend and then look to set up visits to Boston College, Rutgers and Providence.
``Dayton is the leader," Alvarez said. "I really like the coaching staff. They are young and have been successful for the last couple years. Plus, from everything I've heard, the atmosphere at the school is great."
Alvarez was born in Cuba, but spent nearly all of his life in Miami before heading to New Jersey to play at Blair Academy for the combination of academics (he has a 3.7 GPA) and basketball.
He is an athletic and versatile power forward who has the ability to step out and knock down the mid-range jumper as well as mix it up and rebound underneath the basket. He brings a tremendous amount of energy to the table.
``I am really looking forward to having a bigger role this season now that Loul and Charlie are gone," Alvarez said. "Hopefully I can be successful at it. I just want to win a state championship."
Don't discount the chance that Alvarez could pull the trigger within the week.
``It could happen," he said. "But I have to talk to my coach and my family right when I come back from my visit."
