UMass Lands Canadian Big Man

The Massachusetts Minutemen have picked up a big man. This time, Steve Lappas went north to find a big body.

Champlain-St. Lambert has been home to some very good players the past few seasons in the Montreal area. Bernard Cote signed with Kentucky two years ago and Pierre-Marie Altidor-Cespedes will ink with Gonzaga this fall. Now, another St. Lambert product is headed to the States.

Olivier Lamoureux, a 6-8, 235 pounder, committed to Massachusetts on Thursday.

Wyoming, St. Bonaventure and the Minutemen were the finalists. "Lappas came in and with his experience and guys that he sent to the next level and Olivier felt that he was the guy who can take him there," St. Lambert assistant Pete Yannopoulos said. "He wants to help UMass get back to the top of the rankings."

Last season Lamoureux averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds. "Being a big guy inside with our guards, he didn't get as many touches. This year he's going to get the ball a lot more."

The big fella made a name for himself by playing well at the Kentucky Hoopfest and at an event in Kansas City in July. His team finished among the top four at the Hoopfest.

"He's trimmed down his body. He was 235 with some body fat but worked out religiously. He's really improved his body and his game. He's a very skilled power forward who can really shoot the ball. He can step out and shoot the 3. Coach Lappas loved his potential and he's got a chance to be a really good player in the Atlantic-10.
