UMass Lands "Big Deli"

They call him "Big Deli" and he's headed to the Atlantic 10. The UMass Minutemen have added another prospect to their 2003-04 haul.

From "Big Country" to "Big Continent" to "Big Jelly" it's chic to have a nickname if you're a wide body. Well, the Atlantic 10 is about to welcome a new nickname into its league.

Jeff "Big Deli" Salovski committed to Massachusetts on Monday. Salovski, a 6-11, 320-pound plus center, selected UMass over Central Connecticut State, his other finalist.

"He is an immovable force in the post," said Bristol (CT) Central High coach Pete Winninger. "He's not a big kid who plays basketball. He's a basketball player who is a big kid. He's got an assortment of post moves. Because of his size, he takes up a lot of space and alters a lot of shots."

"If he was a kid that weighed 260, he'd be in the upper echelon [of the high-majors]."

Last season, Salovski averaged 19 and 11 for a team that finished 24-2 and lost in the state semifinals.
