The 6-8, 205-pound Blair Academy (N.J.) senior forward committed to the Flyers on Monday, just hours after returning from an official visit to the Ohio school.
``I chose Dayton because of the success they've had recently and the family atmosphere with all the coaches," Alvarez said. "I really like the school and the fans were great." Alvarez had already taken a visit to Rhode Island, but he was getting significant interest from Big East schools of late. Rutgers had offered and Boston College wanted him to take an official visit. Providence was also looking at him.
However, Alvarez ultimately decided to take his energetic game and 3.7 GPA to the Atlantic-10. One of the other primary reasons, according to Alvarez, was because of Dayton assistant Mo Cassara, a former head man in the prep school ranks at Worcester Academy.
``I just thought it was the best fit for me," he added. ``Everything was good on my visit and I really liked everything about it."
With Alvarez in the fold, Gregory and his staff have already secured five commitments for an impressive class that should help the Flyers stay atop the A-10: Guards Trent Meacham and Brian Roberts along with swingman Jimmie Binnie and forward Norman Plummer.
