SMU Hits Daily Double

Wednesday was a big day around the country. As guys committed at a rapid pace, programs high-fived and maybe even lit a few cigars. At SMU, they had to do it twice.

On Wednesday, the Southern Methodist Mustangs double-dipped. On a day when commitments were coming fast and furious, the Ponies landed a pair of players.

Derrick Roberts, a supremely athletic swingman who specializes in getting to rim, got to the phone lines and called the SMU office to commit.

Roberts was impressed enough with SMU's honesty and straight forward approach that picked the Mustangs over TCU and Liberty. "They pretty much came at me real. They didn't sugarcoat it at all. They pretty much sat down and showed me what their roster looked like and what they needed. They've been recruiting me since forever.

"They need somebody to come in and contribute; not just scoring but getting everybody else involved."

As if the Roberts commitment wasn't enough, Mike Dement's bunch added a center. A big one.

Paulius Ritter, a 6-7, 255 pounder from Highland Hall in Tulsa pledged his allegiance. Paulius is originally from Lithuania and it took an SMU staffer's special connection to make it happen.

SMU assistant Alvyds Pazbrazdis, a former Olympian on the 1992 Lithuanian team, used his connections to get this one done for SMU. If you haven't heard of Ritter, that's OK you aren't supposed to know him. He missed the summer circuit because he was at home in Lithuania.

Now, the Mustangs turn their attention to the Class of 2005. They have the two commitments they landed today and also a pledge from Jon Killen, a guard they landed earlier in the year.
